Island Tree is a bit of a fanciful approach to bonsai. Although this one is not set in a pot or plate I started with that concept in mind, setting up an isolated tree with grounding accents all floating in water. I still see it as a self-contained ecosystem much like bonsai. Lagerstroemia or crape myrtle is the subject for this painting and I chose a simple color pallet for my first exploration of this theme, but I already see several with blossoming canopy and more unusual ground designs for my next. For anyone who has tried the art of bonsai it is not as easy as one might think. Patience, knowledge and attention are all that is required; somehow I have missed the boat. This is my way of dealing with my lack of bonsai skills.

Thanks for stopping by! I am an illustrator, designer, artist. Yes, I know, pick one! A difficult thing to do when the energy to explore takes hold. Along with the more decorative designs I create, using a variety of computer programs, I also like to explore more traditional, and abstract artwork, using mediums like oil, acrylic, gouache, and pastel. The combination of these two approaches helps in the creation of many of my more inventive images. My studio is dedicated to working with clients in creating unique and specific images that fit their particular projects. For over 30 years I have been developing images for editorial and product use. If you have a particular project in mind, or would like to incorporate some of my images into...

Very nice work, Randy. Like you, I have found that bonsais are difficult to maintain. Although, I have a tree farming brother and had a mother, who did bonsai's, I have never been successful in keeping one alive for more than a year. I would rather paint them than tend to their delicate ways. I admire you for doing both. I think that putting this subject on an island is a pretty and pleasing composition. f/v

Thanks AnnaJo! It's a safe bet this will last longer than any live bonsai that comes into my hands. Cheers!
