Description
Using The Book of Kells as my inspiration I designed this stylized Celtic cross with many intricate knotwork motifs and a richly textured background. A somewhat popular legend in Ireland is that the Celtic Christian cross was introduced by Saint Patrick to convert the pagan population. One method of doing this was his use of combining two very powerful symbols, the Christian cross and the pagan sun cross. Through his ministry it is believed the importance of the life-giving properties of the sun were eventually transferred to the main Christian symbol. And other interpretations claim that placing the cross on top of the circle represents Christ's supremacy over pagan beliefs. This design was originally used on a cloth wall hanging and available through Monastery Icons at www.monasteryicons.com/monasteryicons/Item_Cross-of-Ireland-wall-hanging_796L_ps_srm.html
